Project Description:

In 1999, Mental Health Care, Inc. initiated renovation of a 23,000 square foot building owned by Mental Health Care for expansion of outpatient mental health treatment programs.  The facility is located across from our main offices in close proximity to our emergency services and other outpatient services.  Phase II of this project involves improvements to 15,500 square feet to accommodate Baylife Industries and Baylife Supported Employment, job training programs providing instruction, placement and support for the seriously mentally ill.  Improvements will also allow for expanded space for other outpatient services.  Phase II of this project involves improvements 15,500 square feet to accommodate Baylife Industries and Baylife Supported Employment, job training programs providing instruction, placement  and support for the seriously mentally ill.  Improvements will also allow for expanded space for other outpatient mental health services to children and families.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

These programs are part of a continuum of care necessary to assist persons with mental illness obtain employment and for persons receiving assistance to transition from welfare to work.

- The State receives incentives from the Federal government for transitioning persons from welfare to work.

- This project will be located with an on-site therapeutic school program serving SED students grades 6-12 assisting the older students to make transition from school to work.  By becoming productive members of our community there is less probability these young adults will become involved in the legal system.

- This project will help the State meet the needs of the 1998 lawsuit {Johnson vs. Sellars (formerly Johnson vs. Kurtz)} filed against G. Pierce Woods Memorial Hospital which reduced the State Hospital census and required major improvements in the quality of care in the hospital and the community.  The Consent Decree requires increased vocational opportunities for persons released from the hospital like those provided by the programs described.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

This project will bring together at a single location a continuum of employment services for persons with mental illness.  It is expected that there will be an increase in the number of adults with mental illness and SED students who obtain and retain employment, as well as, an increase in the number of days worked is a performance measure of the Department of Children & Families.
