Project Description:

The project involves the installation of seven pump stations and related infrastructure for the purposes of providing badly needed drainage and to improve the quality of water discharged from the City into the C-4 Canal in western Miami-Dade County. The C-4 is one of the primary canals draining into Biscayne Bay.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The City of Sweetwater lies within drainage Basin "B" of Miami-Dade County.  Due to existing limitations of the City's drainage infrastructure, it is prone to frequant flooding associated with strong rainfall events. In addition, a significant portion of the City was significantly affected by severe flooding associated with Hurricane Irene who, as documented by the national and international media resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents due to flooding inside their homes.  FEMA is currently in the process of determining the actual damages associated with this flooding event, however, 60% of the residents experienced severe damages.  Implementation of the proposed project will reduce the severity and frequency of flooding and minimize the risk to public health and property.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

As documented in the West Basin Drainage Study prepared by the City in support of environmental resource permits, the City currently experiences over one foot of street flooding as a result of a relatively small storm event such as the 3 year-24 hour storm.  Residential flooding typically occurs as a result of a 10 year-24 hour storm event.  Implementation of the project will increase the level of service for street flooding from a one in 3 year to a one in 10 year for the 24 and 72 hour storm events.  The level of service for residential flooding will increase from a one in 10 year to a one in 25 year for the 24 and 72 hour storm events.
