Project Description:

This project will provide congregate lunches to 45 elderly and handicapped residents of Claude Pepper Towers in downtown Miami, a HUD owned project for the poor elderly, handicapped, and infirm. 45% of the participants are disabled (requiring wheelchairs or walkers); 55% are ambulatory. Currently, all participants are members of minorities; their median age is 75.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Without adequate nutrition and the stimulus of their companions, the condition of these poor, frail elderly is likely to deteriorate, necessitating their placement in a publically financed nursing facility.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

- The program is projected to serve 11,392 hot, nutritious luncheon meals per year at a cost of $3.95 per meal.

- Each meal is designed to meet 1/3 the daily requirement in compliance with the dietary guidelines for Americans over 51 years of age as established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. A registered dietician will review the menus for compliance with the dietary guidelines.

- Meal spices are starches will be varied to suit the tastes of participating ethnic groups.

- The meals will be served at a clean, spacious, comfortable facility, and within walking distance of most program participants.

- The quality of service will be overseen both by the dietician and reviewed by the participants in consultation with their individual case managers.
