Project Description:

Expansion of Wilton Manors Public Library (Library Construction Grant).  This project was ranked 3rd in the state by the Division of Library and Information Services within the Department of State.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The overall purpose of this project is to assure that the residents in the service area of the Library will have access to higher standard/quality of life through printed and electronic media, which will be made available.  The project will serve the 12,000 city residents as well as nearby neighborhoods which are currrently being served by the existing inadequate facility.  The current 2000 square foot building is hampered by its size and lacks needed space for library materials, seating, programs, computers and study/reading areas.  The expansion will result in an approximately 6300 square foot building plus onsite parking and landscaped grounds.  Existing restrooms and entrance ways will be made accessible to the handicapped.

The City recently received a grant from the Bill Gates Library Initiative grant program which has provided seven Gateway computers, a printer and software.  This has added another critical problem because of the current lack of adequate space.  The changing technology in the delivery of information by electronic methods will require flexibility, which will be included in the design of the new building.  Space will be made available for after school programs, tutoring, income tax assistance, children's Summer programs, computer classes, Friends of the Library events and many other services which will serve the needs of the community.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The City will be able to more adequately serve the public with a vastly improved Library facility which will benefit all the citizens from toddlers to the elderly in the community.  Residents in the surrounding communities will also be more adequately served by this up-to-date neighborhood Library.  With the planned all purpose meeting room in place, civic organizations, scout groups, and others will be able to use the Library.  The City is currently lacking a public meeting place.  Additionally, the City's commitment to this project includes the recent purchase of the adjacent property to the present library building.
