Project Description:

Initiation of a primary and community health care clinic for rural residents of Southwest Alachua County. Unmet health care needs continue to be problematic for rural residents of Alachua County. A combination of poverty, lack of transportation, and lack of local access to qualified health care providers results in crisis-oriented, expensive, emergency department use instead of cost-effective, health promotion, disease management, primary and community health care for many families.

This situation is of particular concern to residents in southwest Alachua County. This sector includes the towns of Archer and Newberry. The estimated percentage of residents living in poverty in this sector is 15.5%. The only health care provider is a part-time physician in the town of Newberry. Residents of Archer have appealed to the Colleges of the University of Florida Health Science Center for assistance in meeting their health care needs.

The College of Nursing has worked with these residents to outline the parameters of an interdisciplinary primary care and community health faculty practice that would result in more equitable access to cost-effective health care for rural families. Nurse practitioners, community health nurses, physicians, and clinical pharmacists would constitute the core team in providing comprehensive community and primary health care to area residents. Services would be coordinated with those provided by the Public Health Department, e.g., school nursing at the Archer elementary school. In addition, students from each of these practice disciplines would be supervised by faculty in providing quality health care, thus increasing their knowledge of community-based, interdisciplinary health care delivery and their interest in locating to rural areas of the State upon graduation.

The College of Nursing will provide $50,000 in one-time, start-up costs and $100,000 each year for continued operations. The city of Archer will make $5,000 worth of in-kind contributions. These resources along with clinical revenues generated by the primary care practice are projected to cover all but $200,000 of the estimated $345,000 per year cost of the full-time practice.

State funding in the amount of $200,000 per year is requested in order to support this much needed project.
