Project Description:

The Inner City Youth Center, Inc. (ICYC)is a non-profit organization that provides a comprehensive approach to improving the education and health of the economically disadvantaged children in Edison Park Elementary, Middle and High Schools.  The ICYC addresses the acute needs of the local community in this After School Education and Recreation supervision project.  In addition, the ICYC Educational and Athletic Programs serves to provide a safe learning and recreational environment after school hours for children and youth in the community.  The educational component provides participants with tutorial assistance in  mathematic, reading and English to foster positive progress in the deficient subject area(s).  The athletic component strives to foster a sense of teamwork and camaraderie while promoting a spirit of healthy competition.  Participants are afforded the opportunity to play football, basketball, baseball and partake in cheerleading activities.  This holistic approach provides participants with a variety of health, education and recreational activities designed to enhance and empower the youth and their families.  The ICYC program goals are accomplished through a locally based, readily accessible, one stop education and recreation supervision center.  A distinguishing hallmark of the program is the longitudinal supervisory capacity.  The programs are provided for the school age population after normal school hours.  These positive events replace opportunities for other negative activities which could result in drug use, crime or teenage pregnancy.  This has the ultimate effect of making a positive impact in the education standards and health of the ICYC population. ICYC's Academic Programs consist of its After School Study Hall Program and its Partners Caring for Kids (Readers' Roundtable Program).  Both programs offer tutoring and homework help to participants after school.  A very active sports component is incorporated in ICYC's program to serve as an incentive for participating in the academic and health education pieces.  The sports component includes football, baseball and cheerleading.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The ICYC Health Education and Awareness Program is designed to continually assess individual and family needs.  Through the initial intake, family and/or individual needs are determined and a plan developed.  The Health Educator will work closely with the family to ensure that all health needs are addressed, and appropriate referrals made.  ICYC provides residents of the community with the case management and follow up services necessary to obtain and maintain optimal health.  ICYC also intervenes as situations arise and serve as a continual health education and referral resource.  Effective health education programs will be planned, implemented and evaluated to determine the impact being made on the community.  The ICYC has focused on identifying and serving the economically disadvantaged youth ages 6 to 18 who have been classiied as low-risk to public safety.  These youth reside in the neighborhoods adjacent to the Edison Park Elementary, Middle and High Schools in the Liberty City and Little Haiti sections of Miami, Florida.  The ICYC programs serve to provide interventions to 300 families.  These structured programs focus on education as well as other basic life skills.  The primary age group for the ICYC is elementary, middle, and high school youths.  However, the program also works with the parents or guardians of these youth as this involvement is integral to their success.
