Project Description:

The purpose of Phase II is to construct pumping facilities and transmission mains to transfer wastewater from the "Old Homosassa" area to tie into the Phase I collection and transmission system currently under construction. This project will accept the flow currently carried by a subaqueous line across the Homosassa River, which has a documented history of leaking raw wastewater into the river. The Phase II project will allow the subaqueous line to be taken out of service and abandoned.

The new line will also provide a point of connection for future phases of the program that will provide sewer service to the residences and businesses of the "Old Homosassa" area. The area is currently on septic tanks and is typically a less than median income area.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Homosassa River is highly used for recreation, tourism, and commercial fishing activities. In addition, the river and surrounding marshes are prime wildlife habitat for a variety of species including the West Indian manatee, the bald eagle and the American alligator. The importance of maintaining the Homosassa River and the surrounding coastline has been recognized by State and Federal Agencies and has led to the establishment of the St. Martins Marsh Aquatic Preserve and the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge to the north and south of the river, respectively.

In addition, the Homosassa State Wildlife Park is located in the headwaters of the Homosassa River. It is advertised as the most highly attended State Park in Florida. Also, the Suncoast Parkway construction is expected to bring major increased pressure to this area.

The project will reduce the impact of existing development on the natural systems.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The Phase II project will allow the subaqueous line to be taken out of service and abandoned. The new line will also provide a point of connection for future phases of the program that will provide sewer service to the residences and businesses of the "Old Homosassa" area.
