The University proposes to retrofit the buildings identified as compatible by the engineering firm of PBS&J, to be designated as hurricane evacuation shelters for residents of Pasco County. Also to install a generator. |

The project serves to implement the Pasco County local mitigation Strategy initiative begun in May 1998. Implementation of local mitigation strategy, improve capabilities for hurricane evacuation sheltering. |

|
The provision of hurricane shelter to the vulnerable population in the County is an integral component of disaster response. By ensuring a safe haven for the population in the County, individual suffering, loss of life and personal injury can be reduced during a hazardous or emergency situation. The protection of the public's health, safety and welfare is the impetus behind the designation of hurricane shelters. |
