Project Description:

The Neighborhood State Attorney Initiative (N.S.A.I.) is the next logical extension of community policing and "Front Porch" objectives.  The State Attorney will establish a small neighborhood office in six communities that will be staffed with an attorney and community advocate.  This neighborhood "team" will work to identify community problems and then build partnerships among law enforcement, city and county departments, social service agencies, private businesses and most importantly, community members and organizations, in order to find solutions to jointly solve these identified problems.  The team will be proactive, have considerable independence and use nontraditional methods in order to respond to the needs of citizens and neighborhoods.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The neighborhood initiative will provide a wide range of services.  The team will assist the community policing component by offering criminal and civil legal expertise to the officers on the street as well as providing enhanced prosecution resources for targeted career criminals and repeat offenders.  The team will join up with local schools, city and county departments to assist with code enforcement, nuisance abatement, truancy programs, drug prevention, firearm safety and other such issues that have not traditionally been addressed by state attorneys.  The team will attend and participate in numerous homeowner and community meetings to provide problem solving and crime prevention strategies as well as the creation of a State Attorney Citizens Academy.  In addition, the neighborhood based office will put the team in direct and informal daily contact with the community they are serving.  This unprecedented level of contact with the community will improve communication and increase the communities' education, involvement and satisfaction with the criminal justice system.  The initiative will ultimately reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.  More importantly, the initiative will assist the citizens in taking control and maintaining order in their own communities.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

1) Reduction of crime in targeted neighborhoods and apartment complexes.  2) Reduction in number of repeat property nuisance complaints.

3) Reduction in number of offenses committed by targeted repeat offenders.  4) Increased citizen participation in criminal justice system through community impact statements and court appearances.  5) Increased citizen knowledge of role of state attorney and use of victim services provided by state attorney office.  6) Increased satisfaction with "quality of life" issues in targeted neighborhoods.  7) Reduction in fear of crime from citizens in targeted neighborhoods.

8) Increased number of partnerships between law enforcement and non-law enforcement agencies.  9) Increased sense of cooperation and problem solving success between community groups and public agencies.
