Project Description:

The residential community area of Wauchula Hills obtains their drinking water & wastewater services from individual, on-site, septic tanks & wells.  The local Health Department issued a letter on 1/3/00 that described the soil as primarily Zolfo soil, which is a free draining sand, with the water table at 3-4 feet. Because this soil type is of rapid movement with respect to water passage, nitrates are not satisfactorily removed from the water in septic tanks & it ends up in the ground water. This results in contamination of the ground water & thus the potable drinking water of the heavily populated community.  The Board of County Commissioners is seeking assistance in remedial action to install sanitary sewer to this area in a manner that would allow for growth into other areas at a later date.  The initial project will consist of approximately 5 miles of sewer collection, 1 pump station, 2 miles of force-main, & a 75,000 g.p.d. treatment & effluent system.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

To eliminate health hazards of nitrate contamination to those living & visiting the area.  To allow backbone system that can be locally added to & built upon to include other areas in the future that will allow for safe, clean, modern wasterwater collection & treatment. This entire project will enhance the goal of the SWFWMD & FDEP because the Hardee County Project is up-stream from the Peace River Basin & the Charlotte Harbor Estuary which are listed on the FDEP 303 (d) list & require the type of remedial action & protection this project can provide.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

On-going monitoring will continue to take place to assure lowering of any future contamination of the wells that provide drinking water in the Wauchula Hills community.  The County will work with SWFWMD to assist in every way to provide as much protection to the Peace River & Charlotte Harbor by meeting or exceeding set goals of no off-site disposal of effluent & will participate in adequate record keeping to document these activities.  The County will provide a time-line of the project through completion & will document & submit steps to the appropriate agencies to assure that schedulted time-lines are met.
