Project Description:

The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital is seeking Operational funding for it "Jr. Green Team" Program. This project is designed to offer children who have been identified as being "AT-Risk" a healthier, happier lifestyle, through gardening. Some of the rewards of this program include getting their hands "dirty" seeing something they plant grow, smelling the sweet flowers, tasting a fresh vegetable and hearing the birds sing. Exerting energy in a positive way, seeing something they planted grow are ways of directing youth into better lifestyle. This program would be offered during after school times (early release days), weekends, summer and holiday vacation program (often the time when these children get into trouble). Funding would be used to purchase educational aides, gardening tools, plants, seeds, and equipment. Children will be taught how to create backyard habitats and butterfly using native plants, as well as planting vegetable gardens and fruit trees. They will also be encouraged to plant things at their homes and to help beautify their own neighborhoods.  Joan Kohl, a recent "Governors Point of Light Award" recipient, will direct this project.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

To offer an alternative program for children being

identified as "At-Risk," by teachers, social workers, police and courts. The program will keep these children busy in a fun and education setting by involving them in a rewarding gardening project. This program would be offered during times when these children often become involved in undesirable behavior, when they are often unsupervised and are "bored." By offering a healthier and fun project we hope to reduce juvenile delinquency while promoting a feeling of self-worth and accomplishment. This program can also help prepare these children for entering into the job market by teaching them new career skills and peeking their interest in further educational opportunities.
