Project Description:

The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital is seeking Construction funds to build its "Wildlife Theatre," an outdoor classroom. This structure would allow us to offer unique live animal programs to children and adults living or visiting Broward or West Palm Beach County. The outdoor theatre would be built on our property adjacent to the Everglades, giving visitors a rare and unique experience. Programs would focus on our unique eco-systems and wildlife inhabitants. Several classes could attended at one time and visitors would be shielded from the sun and rain while still being "outdoors." The theatre is walking distance to the Sawgrass Springs Middle School (Broward Counties Environmental & Science Magnet School), via a nature trail. The theatre would offer stadium seating giving every child a good view of the program and would have a good sound and lighting system for evening programs. Program Director, Joan Kohl, is a recent recipient of the "Governors Point Of Light Award," and is experienced in providing excellent environmental education programs.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

This outdoor classroom would enable us to provide

Environmental education to several groups of children at one time, making it more cost efficient. The covered amphitheatre  could be used all year round, providing shade and rain protection. This theatre would be able to provide programs during and after school, weekends, and holidays. More children would benefit from this unique classroom, having a first hand experience of being "One with Nature." It will also be handicapped accessible, and is easily accessible from the Sawgrass Expressway and Sample Road.
