Project Description:

The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital is seeking operational funding for its "Lady Bug" program. This program was specially designed for middle school aged girls, especially those girls identified as being ?At-Risk). It has been found that this is a very trying and hard age for girls. They need to be involved in a more structured environment , which holds their interests. Most girls love being around animals, who give them unconditional love. Working with animals often increases their feelings of self-worth and accomplishment. This program would be offered as an after school program, as well as being offered on weekends and during the summer and holidays (often the time when these girls get into trouble).  Girls would be encouraged to help with animal care, as well as other outdoor activates, including gardening and nature craft programs, and field trips.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

It will provide a healthy, interesting program to "At-Risk" Middle School aged girls, thereby reducing juvenile delinquency and mischief. Alleviating unstructed and unsupervised time , usually after school , weekends, summer and holiday vacations, which often leads to these girls getting into trouble. The Center will work with local schools, police departments, social workers and courts.  Becoming a "Lady Bug" provides a feeling of self-worth and accomplishment. Our program will also help prepare our girls for potential job opportunities and encourage  them to continue their education while gaining important job skills. This program also provides good all around family recreation, educating as well as  entertaining.
