Project Description:

The Sawgrass Nature Center & Wildlife Hospital is seeking Operational Funding for its Environmental Education Programs. These programs are being offered to all school age children in Broward and West Palm Beach County, as well as to college students. Programs will also be offered to tourists visiting  our area. Funding is needed for educational materials, exhibits, printing, books, and scientific materials, as well as for care, food and medical expenses for our "Wildlife Ambassadors," ( live animal exhibits). The Center is under the direction of Joan Kohl, recent recipient of the "Governors Point of Light Award."  The Center is located in the North West Section of Broward County (on the Palm Beach County borderline), adjacent to the Everglades and a newly restored wetland. It is next to the Sawgrass Springs Middle School (Broward Counties Environmental & Science Magnet School), giving their students an excellent opportunity to use its services (both during and after school hours). The Center is located in a regional park, easily accessible by the Sawgrass Expressway and Sample Road.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The Center will provide environmental education to

Students in Broward & West Palm Beach Counties. The Center is ADA compliant, giving many people with special needs a chance to interact with wildlife and experience the uniqueness of the Everglades. The Center has many partnerships with local county and private schools, colleges and universities, offering their students work-study programs, internships and help transition students into the work force, The Center will also offer after school, weekend and holiday programs helping to eliminate juvenile delinquency and offering children a happy and healthy source of recreation and education.
