Project Description:

The City of Gainesville identified a need for a municipal recreational building in 1942 that has never been met. The building will be used for conventions, amateur sporting events, and community recreational activities including after-school activities. The Sports Planning Organization for Recreation and Training (SPORT) has worked with sports and recreation specialists in North Central Florida since 1999 to obtain partners in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Escambia County and Lake County to develop a series of multi-purpose sports facilities. These facilities would be capable of hosting national and international amateur sports events that help generate economic benefits from the participants and spectators who attend. These events not only benefit the local economy, they also positively affect the state economy with visits to nearby beaches and tourist attractions.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Increased participation by children and teens in recreational and after school programs; economic impact created by hosting events and sporting events, such as serving as an Olympic training facility; extra "bed tax" revenues generated; ripple effect in regional and statewide economic benefits when visitors visit nearby beaches and tourist attractions.
