Project Description:

A 1997 AHCAA report to the Florida Legislature concluded that hospitals will ?continue to face cost containment pressure in the coming years? and that the impact of nurse staffing on the quality of care ?is expected to remain and ongoing issue?.  In order to better understand the impact of RN staffing on patient outcomes in acute care, this research study will collect and analyze data on the relationship between the number and type of staff providing direct care to patients in Florida hospitals and the outcomes of that care.  The goal is to create an interactive state-wide database that will be available to all Florida hospitals.  Use of this database will enable hospitals to compare their staffing levels and patient outcomes of that care.  The database will also provide nurse executives with the information needed to evaluate the real impact of current staffing levels, and any changes made in these levels, on patient outcomes.
