Project Description:

There are currently 48 miles of dangerous and hazerdous county roads in Flagler County because they are narrower than the standard 24 feet in width.  Many of these roads carry school buses, others have major subdivisions.  The problem was caused when Florida transfered many of these roads to Flagler County, who does not have nearly enough in financial resources to make the necessary infrastructure investment to bring these dangerous roads to a safe width.  The $497,000 requested this year will allow the County to begin Planning and Engineering these improvements.  This in the DOT with 5 year work program, starting in 2004-2005, however, with the County's match, the project can start today.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

There are several outcomes.  First, many of these roads could serve as economic development cooridors, however, because of their substandard and dangerously narrow widths, the roads are a disincentive for employment.  A wider road would provide for much more efficent transfer of goods and services, which will be measurable by increased gross receipts to county businesses and agricultural interests.  Secondly, there will be a measurable drop in the number of accidents because the roads will be safer.
