Project Description:

This project will create a Lake Okeechobee diversion route to minimize adverse estuarine discharges, improve public utility water deliveries and optimize the ecological health of environmentally sensitive systems in northern Palm Beach County. Once completed the project will facilitate the delivery of runoff normally discharged to tide to enhance environmental and public water supplies for all of northern Palm Beach County, including the Loxahatchee River, a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Increased certainty of being able to meet water supply demands through 2020, while improving existing levels of local flood protection, increased flexibility in managing Lake Okeechobee stages thereby improving the health of the Lake's littoral zone.  The Loxahatchee Slough Flowway Improvements project will enhance thousands of acres of environmentally sensitive lands (West Palm Beach Water Catchment Area/Loxahatchee Slough) in northern Palm Beach County, and provide deliveries of fresh water needed to meet Minimum Flows and Levels for the Loxahatchee River, a nationally designated Wild and Scenic River. Construction of these improvements will result in attainment of 81% of the designated target Minimum Flow and Level.
