Project Description:
This program is a gang prevention program that plans to serve 2,000 children in 200 schools and will be staffed by 1 sergeant and 28 officers. This presentation component of the program will be available to all 5th grade students in Miami-Dade County's unincorporated areas served by the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), and focuses on gang alternatives and resistance strategies for students as they get ready to enter middle school. The University of Miami's Athletic Department will be a partner in this program by providing athletes and coaches as role models. The university will also provide sport camps, tickets to sports events, tours of their campus, and provide students with access to team practices.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
This program will be more than just a message, it will provide children with alternative attitudes; it will encourage children that join gangs to meet their social needs to fulfill those needs in more positive ways (i.e. joining teams).
