Project Description:

The restoration efforts being proposed here include the following items, which are mandated in the Lake Okeechobee Law (Chapter 00-130, Laws of Florida): phosphorus source control assessments in the Lake Istokpoga and Upper Kissimmee Chain-of-Lakes watersheds; exotic species control in the littoral marsh region of Lake Okeechobee; land acquisition for the building of a stormwater treatment area in the Taylor Creek/Nubbin Slough basin; implementation of best available technologies on dairies in the Lake Okeechobee watershed; and water quality modeling and monitoring to assess the effectiveness of restoration efforts. In addition, we request money for efforts associated with the rehabilitiation of the Herbert Hoover Dike, as recent investigations by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers suggest the Dike does not meet current applicable safety factors.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Improved water quality of Lake Okeechobee, improved habitat for fish and wildlife in Lake Okeechobee, reduced scientific uncertainty in assessing the effectiveness and efficiency of restoration practices (i.e. maximize return on investment and maximize long-term cost avoidances), and increased public safety.
