Project Description:
This $800,000 appropriation will allow the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Board of Directors to renovate the historic St. Augustine Amphitheatre. The facility was built in 1965 and was home to the Cross and the Sword, the official state play. High traffic and the tests of time have caused there to be need for significant improvements. The plan is to replace the seating area with perminant seats, renovate the stage area with a roof and to enhance the size of the ticket, administration and dressing room building. The County is working with the Anastasia State Park, which owns the land and the facility to help develop nature trails and other environmental education programs at the facility. The facility has never received funding in the past, however, the state play, the Cross and Sword, received an annual appropriation.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The renovations will undoubtedly significantly enhance the facility, which will increase both the number of events and the ticket sales. The fiscal impact to the community will be substantial.
