Project Description:

This includes a one-time cost to construct a 3,000 square foot greenhouse at OWCC in Niceville. The first year would require a salary for a full-time manager of the native Plant Nursery employed through OWCC.  Grant-funded projects through the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance will provide part-time support, volunteer help and edcucational efforts.  This request for the first-year funding includes an annual operating budget for the necessary plant propagation materials.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The greenhouse will allow plant materials for shoreline and propagation of seagrasses around Choctawhatchee Bay.  Marsh vegetation provides food, shelter, habitat and spawning/nursery areas for most of our commercially and recreationally important seafood species.  Additionally, marsh vegetation improves water quality and clarity as well as protects shorlines from erosion caused by wind, waves, currents, sea level rise, devlopment, and mismanagement.  Many community based organizations and municipalities around the bay are initiating projects and require plant materials and support.
