Project Description:

In FY1999/2000, the Florida Legislature allocated $125,000 to obtain, transport, and distribute additional food to emergency feeding agencies throughout the State.  Florida has a growing number of families that finc themselves in need of food; and at time, the state has had to rely on surplus foods in emergencies, like Hurricane Andrew.  Beyond the State's borders, there are tremendous amounts of surplus food that are often lost to Florida because of a lack of transportation dollars.  The goal of this project is to obtain, trasnport, and distribute an additional 2,725,000 pounds of food product that would otherwise not be available to those in need.  The Florida Association of Food Banks, consisting of fourteen not-for-profit regional organizations located throughout Florida, will collect and distribute the surplus food.  The money for this project will be used primarily for transportation costs as well as for storing and some processing, with 20% targeted for rural communities.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

With the requested appropriation of $500,000, the Florida Association of Food Banks will obtain and transport an additional 7 million pounds of food into the State with a wholesale value of $10,640,000.  Twenty percent of the grant allocation will be dedicated solely to the transportation and distribution of food products in rural communities, affecting communities in almost every county.  We have demonstrated this project to be efficient and effective with the FY 1999/2000 appropriation exeeding our projected goals and showing outstanding growth potential.  Within the first four months of last year's project, approximately $1.8 million wirth of additional food was purchased for the sum of $50,178.  With this purchase, the Florida Association of Food Banks reached 43% of it's goal, expending only 37% of the allocated funds.  No other State program offers this level of return for such a modest investment.
