Project Description:
The Center for Independence has determined that approximately three-fourths of the parents who have children with disabilities in need of residential services are over the age of 75. There is an immediate need for statewide residential services. If not addressed the fiscal impact on the State of Florida could be disastrous. It costs almost $82,000 per person per year in an institution. The Center currently operates 3-bed, 4-bed and 6-bed group homes. The cost to operate each home per person is $58,000, $41,500 and $31,000 respectively. The funding from this request will allow the Center to build and operate three 6-bed homes, the most cost effective model. The homes would be operated in a fashion similar to the Center's existing homes, all of which are acceptable to the residents and their families and which meet the guidleines of the Florida Department of Children & Families' Developmental Disabilities Program Office. The operation of the homes would be supplemented by the Social Security checks of the individual residents. The homes would benefit the state by reducing the expenses of ICF/DD's and other institutional clients who are on the residential waiting list statewide.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
18 individuals with developmental disabilites will be removed from the waiting list for residential services.
