Project Description:

The funds provided from this request will allow the Institute to construct a new education center for up to 180 students to utilize through court-ordered intervention services.  The participants in the program learn marine-related skills such as seamanship, swimming, scuba, coastal conservation and experimental learning.  The program also assists program participants in transitioning back to the community from residential programs.  Assistance with re-enrollment in school or obtaining gainful employment is also provided.  For those students choosing to return to school, assistance in securing a GED or training through a vocational program is provided.  In addition, through community service projects, the participants are encouraged and given the opportunity to repay their debts to society.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

180 students (100 students in day program and 80 students in evening program) will utilize the court- ordered intervention services provided by the Institute.

The construction of the education center will allow the Institute to save approximately $35,000 per year in rent that it currently pays for its existing location.  Those dollars could then be used to expand services.
