Project Description:

The City of Coconut Creek has developed a mission to develop a symbiotic relationship among its educational institutions and the community as a whole.  Transportation among these facilities is of prime importance.  The proposed project consists of a master planning component and a phase one-implementation component.  Existing educational opportunities within the two-mile corridor include Atlantic Technical Center, Coconut Creek High School, Ted Thomas Activity Center and the north Campus of Broward Community College (BCC).  Under construction in the middle of this range of uses is the Associated Builders and Contractors Corporate Headquarters and Apprentice Training facility.

The project includes establishing a transportation network that will begin with a dedicated circulator bus.  Property values in the communities in this area are unstable.  One important advantage of this program is it adds marketability to the communities of Wynmoor, the Township and Palm Aire.  These areas will have pleasant, comfortable transportation to and from higher education facilities.  Equally important is the ability for the various institutions to develop program partnerships.  Seniors at Coconut Creek High School can now take a limited number of classes at both BCC and Atlantic Vo-tech.  This concept could be greatly expanded.

The master planning effort will focus on creating a network of corridors designed for pedestrians and bicyclists.  Walkable design standards will focus on improving connections by increasing pedestrian, bicycled and transit choices and reducing the need to use an automobile for short trips.  Most importantly, these corridors will be designed to accommodate pedestrian friendly transit, such as low-level trolleys.

Services Provided/Benefits:       By linking the educational facilities along this corridor, the project will benefit education in the community.  This facility or network of facilities will also provide a readership base for the Broward County Mass Transit system, which operates in this area with only minimal ridership.  Secondary benefits include increased property values in a portion of the County that is currently stagnating.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

1) Increases program coordination among the various educational opportunities by 50% within 3 years of the program inception.
