Project Description:

Youth & Family Alternatives' ALPHA program follows the current statewide model.  It is a voluntary prevention program for 4th and 5th grade students in Pasco County.  The program is funded through alcohol and drug prevention dollars coming to the State of Florida by a block grant.  The Pasco County School Board provides the teacher and the counseling space in elementary schools where the program operates.  The program serves children who will benefit from short-term, intensive counseling, reduced class size and emphasis on small group and individual instruction.  The early signs of underachievement, inadequate social skills, shy, withdrawn or other behaviors are noted by teachers who refer the at-risk students to the program.  The goal of the program is to work with the child, parent(s) and teachers to the point of being able to see the student return to the regular classroom with increased success in academics and improved social skills.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

1. Maintain an average utilization rate of 85% of attendance during funding period.

2. 80% of the children will demonstrate improved behavior upon program completion.  Problem behavior will be considered improved if there is a reduction in the problem behaviors identified for each child.

3. 80% of the students will achieve a minimum of a six-month grade level increase in reading and math, or will progress within grade level upon completion.

4. 95% of the students who complete the ALPHA program will not become involved in drug/alcohol treatment programs or have an adjudication for delinquency within one year of completion.

5. 80% of children served in the ALPHA program will show an improvement in self-esteem.

6. 100% of the parents whose children have completed the ALPHA program will be provided a Family Satisfaction Questionnaire.

7. At least 95% of children will percieve substance abuse to be harmful at the time of discharge as compared to at time of admission.

8. 15 students will be served per semester; 30 students per year.
