Project Description:

The Firearms Range and Training Area will measure  approximately 100 yards x 25 yards, providing ample space for 4 to 5 firing positions.  The area will be surrounded on three sides by earth berms specifically designed to retain projectiles within the area.  The range will be grass or gravel stones as budget permits.  The entire site will be surrounded by a 7 foot chain link fence to protect against unauthorized entry during training and when the site is not in use.  The berms will be designed to comply with all applicable environmental protection laws. The entire site, including earth berms,  will measure approximately 100 yards x 100 yards.

The Firearms Range and Training Field will be utilized during training exercises and will be available for use by other law enforcement agencies for training.  It will not be available for use by the general public.

The focus of this proposed project is to provide the Police Department with a readily available safe area to conduct training classes and tactical exercises on a frequent and regular basis.  Currently, the Police Department uses both a privately-owned, publicly-used  indoor range and a publicly-owned, publicly-used outdoor range.  The indoor range is subject to the proprietor?s schedule and functionality of the air filtering system. The outdoor range is over 30 minutes away and difficult to schedule because it is used by several other law enforcement agencies.

Services Provided/Benefits: To provide the Police Department with a practical firearms training site, proximal to the City, distant from residential and commercial properties, and readily available for training the on-duty officers..  Being an outdoor range, it will also reduce the firearms instructors? exposure to airborne lead particles.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The Police Department anticipates a fifty percent increase in the total man-hours of training provided to police officers.  The officers? availability to respond from training to emergencies will dramatically improve (value is immeasurable), as officers are no longer twenty miles from the city limits when training.
