Project Description:

The Greater Melbourne Police Athletic League(PAL) offers educational and athletic programming to at-risk youth. Melbourne PAL's recent addition to services includes a  mobile learning lab. This lab consists of twelve computer workstations, numerous tutorials and computer programs and a qualified instructor to assist youth. The mobile computer lab visits targeted neighborhoods weekly exposing at-risk youth to educational opportunities and assistance. Melbourne PAL also provides athletic activities for youth with an emphasis on teaching important life skills. Participants are given lesson plans on various topics including anger management, self-esteem, domestic violence, gang avoidance, anti-smoking, leadership skills and substance abuse prevention.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Melbourne PAL aims to reduce truancy rates by offering educational programming to increase knowledge and self-esteem of participants. PAL also offers various athletic opportunities to engage youth in positive after-school and weekend activities to help reduce juvenile crime and occupy free time.
