Project Description:

Family Anger Management Education(F.A.M.E.) places an emphasis on specific skills needed to successfully enable youth to express, defuse and negotiate anger.  Parents participate in the goup sessions to understand the skills being taught and to learn methods to model and reinforce them at home.  F.A.M.E. will give those youth who are demonstrating difficulty in managing their anger the specific skills needed to constructively express, defuse and negotiate anger while giving their parents methods to model and reinforce the identified skills at home.  The youth and their parents will attend 4 weekly multi-family two-hour group sessions.  Each session will provide a teen component and a parent component.  The teen component will focus on specific skills needed to successfully enable youth to express, defuse and negotiate anger.  The parent component will focus on understanding the skills being taught and to learn methods to reinforce them at home.  Both teens and parents will come together for joint excercises each session.  By targetting the youth at the first brush with authorities the program will work with families to intervene quickly to prevent the youth from escalating into violent and/or destructive behaviors.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Youth will develop the skills needed to constructively manage anger, strengthen the family and their support systems, thereby reducing the risk of violence and juvenile crimes as well as increasing family functioning.  Successful particpants will: reduce family hostility, aggression and conflict 15%; decrease home violence by 50%.
