Project Description:

Preparing for the Drug Free Years is a research-based program that has proven effective in helping parents of children ages 9-14 protect their children from substance abuse and other delinquent behaviors.  This program increases protective factors and lowers risk factors that exist in families.

Services will provide a series of workshops at which parents of children ages 9 to 14 get information and develop skills in five major topics: confronting the problem of children's use of drugs; developing a clear family position on drugs; teaching children skills to help them stay out of trouble; containing family conflict; and strenghtining family bonds.  The curriculum of this multi-media skills training program is delivered in a 5 to 1- session format.  It utilizes video games, workbook excercises and guided discussions to meet clearly defined objectives.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reductions in children's antisocial behavior, improved academic skills, better bonding to prosocial others and fewer incidents of drug use in school.  Reducing the number of children requiring substance abuse treatment will save the State $7 for every $1 spent.  Keeping families intact and functioning, the State will save the cost of emergency shelters and placement for addicted youth.
