Project Description:

The Small Animal Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) opened in 1978. For 22 years it has served the public and the veterinary profession without major renovation. It suffers from inadequacies that seriously lesson the impact on the advancement of veterinary medicine and human health, the ability to effectively serve the public, and the protection of Florida's animal industry. The most pressing inadequacy deals with the lack of clinical teaching space, exam room space and technology. Compared to other vet. colleges, Florida is markedly behind. The lack of space has negatively impacted the number of patients received and the ability to teach. The possibility of strictly renovating is more costly than building a new facility.  New equipment is necessary based on advances in technology. This project will provide: a high quality educational environment; advanced tertiary facilities to accurately diagnose and treat patients referred from other veterinarians; a cancer referral center for pets as well as advancement of new cancer treatments in people; new digital imaging service with CT, nuclear medicine, MRI and ultrasound; separate ER, ICU and anesthesia recovery area; improved telecommunications equipment; enhance faculty recruitment and retention; space for joint veterinary technician training programs with community colleges. A new facility is needed to continue service to the public, to fulfill expectations of veterinary education and appropriate high quality health care.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Improved economic viability of Florida's animal industries and zoological parks. Greater efficiency in DVM instruction and improved and expanded medical care of hospital patients. Improved treatment of animal diseases, which often leads to development of more effective treatment of similar conditions in humans. Enhanced faculty recruitment and retention; space for joint veterinary technician training programs with community colleges. Continued service to the public, fulfill expectations of veterinary education and appropriate high quality health care.
