Project Description:

As part of its Redevelopment Plan, the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency has identified Merritt Park Place as a sub-area within the Redevelopment Area boundary and has prioritized this area for the installation of sanitary sewer and urban stormwater improvements.

Merritt Park Place is characterized by having a very high water table which results in a high rate of septic tank failures.  It is a community with very high density (50' lots - approximately 150 septic systems).  Brevard County Environmental Health Services has indicated that these systems, as a result of age, high water table, poor soils, density, and change of land use to commercial, are failing and often require variances from the State of Florida Department of Health.  Proximity to the Indian River makes the elimination of septic tanks a high environmental priority and in the public interest.  The studies generated by the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) SWIM Plan established that the physical characteristics of the Lagoon make it unsuitable for disposal of sewage effluent.

The goal of this project will be to assist in the elimination of these aging or failed septic systems in close proximity to the Indian River Lagoon through the installation and connection to sanitary sewer.  Effluent from this collection system will be treated by deep-well injection at the Merritt Island regional sewage treatment plant located on North Merritt Island.
