Project Description:

The Foundation for Dreams, Inc. is a non profit organization whose mission it to build and operate Dream Oaks Camp for special needs children.  This project will provide a day camp and residential sleep over camp program located in Eastern Manatee County for children with special needs.  It is designed to serve those children ages 7 to 16 who are chronically ill, mentally or physical handicapped.  Each week of the residential camp operations will serve children with a specific illness or disability.  All activities of the residential camp programs will be detailed and altered for the capabalities of each attending group.  The residential camp will initially operate over the summer months (June to August) and operate 5 days per week.  The residential camp will provide programs and concepts that will assist these children to better cope with their handicap or disease by bonding and blending with others and by building steps to a greater self confidence and strengthening life skills.  This will be accomplished by offering specialized therapy programs such as aquatic therapy, art therapy, music therapy, animial therapy, humor therapy, recreational programs, bereavment counseling, equestrian therapy, nutrition counseling and by having good "ol fashion" camping fun.  Each attending group of children of the residential summer program will participate in events as appropriate to their illness or disability.  The residential camp will employ appropriately qualified staff to administer the specailized therapy programs and approrpriate background investigation.  The Foundations for Dreams will seek accrediation for the Dream Oak Camp through the American Camping Association.
