Project Description: |
Mote Marine Laboratory has developed a leading program in aquaculture research using controlled environment and closed-cycle culture systems and methods. With assistance from Russian scientists, our sturgeon research project has succeeded in raising the most valuable Caspian Sea species, beluga hybrids, in biosecure culture systems. This technology has great potential for large scale economic development in Florida. In the 2000 program the Department of Agriculture awarded Mote a contract to build and start up a pilot scale grow-out system to demonstrate the economic potential of raising Russian species sturgeon in a large-scale closed-cycle system under Florida conditions. For the coming year we are seeking to operate the demonstration facility and develop captive sturgeon broodstock. |
