Project Description:

The project will address four major areas: Exhibits: Collection and existing exhibits will be redesigned and woven into a comprehensive story line of the natural and cultural history of Florida's Gulf Coast.  Education: Classroom space and the Discovery Place will be enhanced to better serve over 25,000 school children who visit from at least eleven Florida Couties annually.  The Museum will be able to provide more opportunities for life-long learning and enjoyment in a variety of interest areas.  Collections:  The preservation, security and display of the Native American, Maritime, colonial Spanish, Florida Cracker, era and other multi-cultural collections will be enhanced with climate-controlled conditions, proper lighting and storage.  The entire collection, along with individual artifacts will be able to be loaned to museums across the state, increasing awareness of the South Florida Museum and this region of Florida.  Exterior and Entry Access:  An entry compatible with the current downtown revitilization will provide interesting and easy access for school groups, tour groups and visitors.  Orientation and way finding will be enhanced.  Stairways will be brought up to code and an additional elevator will be provided for groups and disabled visitors.
