Project Description:

Recruitment and Training Project Economic Development Corporation (referred to as ?RTPEDC?) was established in 1998 to provide myriad services in one of the state?s most violent and at-risk areas, Liberty City in Miami, FL. RTPEDC is a member of the Community Action Framework for Youth Development in Miami-Dade County.

RTPEDC has and continues to provide services such as:  after school reading and math tutoring services to the area?s juvenile justice at-risk youth;  family counseling services, drug counseling services by the local police department, and group sessions on non-violent conflict resolution, pro-social bonding, and life skills training.  In addition, RTPEDC provides GED preparation courses for adults in the at-risk area.

RTPEDC has operated independent of state supported funding since its inception in 1998.  Now, it seeks one-time, nonrecurring state funding for purchase and development of an educational computer lab consisting of 25 workstations.  The educational computer lab will provide accelerated reading and math programs for youth at-risk of entering the juvenile justice system and GED preparatory coursework for adults in the Liberty City area.

This RTPEDC legislative budget request will enable the organization to:

?          Purchase software and hardware for a 25-station education computer lab;

?          Purchase the books for the GED program;  and

?          Pay the equivalent of one staff person for 12-months to implement the computer lab program.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

?          Fifty youth at-risk of entering the juvenile justice system shall improve their pretest/assessment math and reading levels by two grade levels within 12 months of the computer lab?s operational commencement.

?          Fifty percent of participating adults qualified to begin GED preparation shall earn a GED certificate within 12 months of the computer lab?s operational commencement.
