Project Description:

Native aquatic and wetland plant communities improve water quality and provide fish and wildlife habitat, primary objectives in the Harris Chain of Lakes and the muck farm restoration sites in the UORB.  On the Harris Chain of Lakes, lake vegetation has declined dramatically since the 1960s.  Native emergent wetland vegetation will be planted along lake shorelines to achieve a 30 percent desirable plant coverage of shoreline restoration areas within five years.  In the muck farm restoration sites, natural regeneration of desirable native plants is limited due to loss of seed sources from decades of farming.  Planting will reintroduce long-lived native wetland plants to the restoration sites, allowing these species to spread naturally and form more diverse wetland plant communities.  This funding will provide for planting a diversity of native aquatic and wetland plants along the shorelines of Lakes Eustis, Harris and Griffin and at Lake Harris Conservation Area, Emeralda Marsh Conservation Area, Sunny Hill Restoration Area and Ocklawaha Prairie Restoration Area.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Improved water quality; acres of native emergent wetland vegetation; acres of restored shoreline habitat.
