Project Description:
This project provide outreach, education & cancer screening tests to Haitians and Haitian Americans living in Dade County. The focus of the project will be to educate the community on four cancers: prostate, breast, colon and cervical cancer, which has a signficantl higher population. A cervical cancer brochure written and distributed. Culturally sensitive creole health education will be provided through workshops, radio shows, TV shows, and focus groups. Idenfified persons meeting criteria for special cancer screening will be linked to the screening tests through translation, explanation of tests and reminder call in Creole and screening tests will be funded by the Haitian American Association Against Cancer (HAAAC). Outreach activities throughout Dade County will also be conducted in an effort to reach the maximum amount of Haitians to educate and screen. These outreaches will be conducted @ grocery stores, laudromats, hair salons, soccer games and other popular gathering places.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
200 non-insured Haitian women will be screened for cervical and breast cancer by local health care providers. 150 non-insured Haitian men will be screened for prostate cancer by local health care providers. Post test of all workshops will have a 90% score or higher showing increased knowledge of all participants on cancer symptoms, early detection, importance of screeing and the role of nutrition and exercise in overall wellness. Develop an effective cervical cancer brochure culturally appropriate and in Creole through collaboration of core group members and tested through 3 focus groups.
