Project Description:

The purpose of this project is to develop a statewide initiative which targets low-income residents living in urban distressed neighborhoods in order to produce an atmosphere where every registered voter is able to successfully express their wish through a properly cast ballot. The ultimate goal of this project is to develop a medium where low-income residents are properly educated on the electoral process. The nine cities that the Institute is charged with assisting are Pensacola, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The major key to creating a more comprehensive educational modality for empowerment of these targeted voters is collaborative efforts that will be put forth with local organizations, such as the faith-base community. The impact of these training tools will be closely monitored and analyzed in relationship with the 2002 statewide election.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The measurable services/products will be the non-partisan voter education tools, the comparative number of inner-city voters participating in this election and the comparative number of successful voting outcomes. The techniques and resources produced through this effort should be easily transferable to statewide use in future elections-- regardless of location, interpretation of existing statutes, or the political party in control of state government.
