Project Description:
The program (PIPSA)teaches professional students about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) abuse. These students are sent to middle schools to teach about ATOD abuse. In its 3 years, this program has reached nearly 1800 professional students and 46,000 middle school students. PIPSA's goal is to expand this program to a statewide level, creating relationships between Health Science Centers and middle schools to decrease substance abuse among students, increase skills of professional students relative to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse and provide adolescent students with positive role models. With adequate funding, the program will continue the tobacco component of PIPSA in the 4 Health Science Centers and the new FSU Medical Program, strengthen the impact of the program by involving more middle school teachers in the planning and implementation of the program, lay a foundation for collaboration that will improve the efficacy of the ATOD abuse prevention program and expand it to other areas, and lay a foundation for future expansion of PIPSA to Community Colleges so all middle school students in Florida can be involved.
