Project Description: |
Due to the high cost associated with being a Level I Trauma Center, a high volume of uninsured/underinsured trauma patients, and overall poor reimbursement for trauma care, Level I Trauma Centers are requesting additional funding to help support the financial responsibility of being a trauma center. Too often, trauma centers consider "dropping out" of maintaining their Trauma Center designation due to heavy financial losses incurred with trauma care. With this additional funding, trauma centers will have the financial support required to maintain all services required to be Level I Trauma Centers. At TGH, additional trauma funding will help finance a much needed Trauma Resuscitation Bay renovation project, purchase upgraded trauma medical equipment, and offset costs incurred with the addition of a third helicopter. With this requested funding, all trauma patients to TGH will benefit from improvements of the Trauma Resuscitation Bay and new upgraded medical equipment. And patients in the northern counties of Tampa will benefit from more expeditious transport to Trauma Centers, hopefully realizing improved survival rates. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |

All Trauma Centers, including the 4 teaching Level I Trauma Centers as well as the 2 community hospitals are mandated to provide statistical data, quality indicators, and outcome data for all trauma patients treated within their trauma centers. This data is downloaded from the trauma center's trauma registry to the State Trauma Registry. Data is cumulated for all trauma centers within the state, and compares how the trauma centers in Florida are doing in comparison to one another, as well as in comparison to other trauma centers in the National TRAC's Trauma Registry. From this data, national studies and publications have evolved, supporting allegations that survival rates and outcomes are vastly improved for seriously injured trauma patients who receive immediate access to the expertise of the trauma teams within designated trauma centers. Additionally, within Florida, regional Trauma Audit Committees (TAC's), comprised of both trauma centers and non-designated trauma centers, meet monthly to review outcome data and issues surrounding the care of patients at trauma versus non-trauma centers. At Tampa General Hospital, as well as Shands/Jacksonville, Orlando Regional, and Jackson Memorial, efforts continue to determin the true cost of trauma care, and any losses incurred through the trauma programs. We continue to benchmark for best practices in cost containment initiatives, as well as quality improvement initiatives. |
