Project Description:

To better understand the cause(s) and ecological impacts of these harmful seaweed blooms, Harbor Branch proposes to survey and sample impacted and reference areas using underwater vehicles, digital video and SCUBA to: Document the extent of damage caused by harmful algal blooms to economically valuable ecosystems; Identify the various sources of the nitrogen that are believed to be feeding these harmful blooms.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

This study will: Identify which nitrogen sourrces are causing harmful algal blooms in different areas of south Florida; Demonstrate how to prevent the health of south Florida's coastal waters, which are inextriably linked to it's tourist-based economy.  This initiative will provide critical information to resource managers that will allow mitigation of the escalating problem of harmful algal blooms.  In taking this step, Florida will join the national consensus that immediate actions are required to moderate harmful algal blooms and their ecological and economic consequences.
