General Summary

This is work assisting in the design and implementation of public relations and information services, as well as the conveyance of news and public information, for the Florida Senate Majority (Republican) Office. 
 
Work includes speaking to members of the media, and researching and writing articles, speeches and other materials for the Leader of the Senate Majority (Republican) Office and Senators in the Majority Caucus. 

Examples of Work Performed

  • Researches, analyzes, and interprets legislative work product for the preparation and dissemination of public information. 
  • Serves as a media spokesperson for the Republican Leader and other Republican Senators as assigned.  
  • Assists in the development of communication plans. 
  • Prepares social media content including photos, videos and information graphics for Senators.
  • Authors a weekly electronic newsletter during legislative committee weeks and legislative sessions. 
  • Assists in researching, coordinating, planning, preparing, and disseminating newsletters, articles, speeches, fact sheets, and other publications to support public information activities. 
  • Analyzes information and public relations needs of Legislators and district staff. Prepares news releases for the Republican Leader and reviews and revises news releases submitted by Senate district staff. 
  • Assists in training legislative assistants in the preparation and dissemination of news releases, constituent inquiries, and other communications materials. 
  • Represents the Senate Majority Leader in meetings, conferences, media availabilities, and various functions as assigned. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective written and verbal communication. 
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of public relations, public information, mass communications, journalism, news reporting, editing, advertising or marketing. 
  • Knowledge of journalism ethics, rules, and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of the legislative process. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. 
  • Ability to act as a spokesperson. 
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. Ability to analyze complicated information and disseminate same using clear, concise language. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to research topics, write articles, and prepare information for dissemination. 
  • Ability to provide technical assistance on information and public relations matters. 
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize, and coordinate work assignments. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years of professional experience in news reporting, research, public relations, public information, advertising, marketing, journalism, or mass communications. 
 
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in communications can substitute for one year of the required experience. Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Salary commensurate with experience.
