Project Description: |
The project proposed addresses a Priority 1 (highest ranking) problem area from the County's Stormwater Master Plan (SMP) discharging directly to the Choctawhatchee Bay. The Bay is listed on the 1998 Section 303 (d) impaired water list as WBI
D778C. In addition, the Bay is a Group 3 Basin in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection total maximum daily load program for northwest Florida. In Phase I of TMDL implementation, the Bay has been identified as a Category 3c waterbody which means the Bay meets the Planning List criteria for TMDL development and is potentially imnpaired for one or more designated purposes. The proposed project will reshape the existing secondary conveyance ditches to shallow side slopes and vegetated to enourage nutriet uptake and velocity reduction to encourage minor setting. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
This project will significantly reduce sediment and nutrient loads to the Bay and subsequently protect the environment. Through reconstructing roadside swales and construction of stormwater treatment ponds and/or installation of cyclonic stormwater structures, the propsed project will reduce pollutant loadings to the Bay. This project also can be connected to the economic impacts experienced from HAB outbreaks in the Bay. Shellfish quantities, and frightened consumers who avoid seafood are well-known impacts of major blooms of harmful algae. In addition, indirect costs to the local economy may include negative publicity to prospective vacationers to the area, adverse health effects, lost marine recreational opportunities, and loss of business for the local fishing guides on the Bay. |
