Statewide Interest: |
Since July 1999, Manatee County has conducted and subsidized a successful, but costly, countywide compulsory attendance pilot project to age 18. In 2002-03, we expect to enroll 365 students who would not otherwise have been in school. Neighboring districts have already visited our project. They applauded our efforts, but they chose not to replicate the project because of its expense. The project requires cooperation from the courts and a series of alternative education interventions. If implemented throughout Florida, this program would help solve a portion of the state's workforce problems. |

Project Description: |
The MCSB seeks legislative support to defray a portion of the costs of requiring students to attend school until age 18 or until high school graduation. In three years, largely due to FS 1003.61, Manatee County has reduced its drop out rate from 7.4 percent to 3 percent and increased its graduation rate from 56.2 percent to 68.9 percent. The School Board seeks funding for the bulk of the costs in providing non-FTE-generating on-line instruction to 16- & 17-year-old students. |
