Project Description: |
The Biomedical PhD Program at the Unversity of Miami School of Medicine provides for doctoral level research training for Florida residents in five specific areas of biomedical science. This program makes available advanced training that is not otherwise available to Floridians in south Florida. In addition to the specific benefit of this program to Floridians who receive the training, the region and the state benefit through the creation of a more favorable environment for economic development. Both pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies thrive best in environments where they can recruit from such advanced training programs. Further, the employees of such companies often seek additional research training such as that we provide under the contract. For 2003, we are seeking to serve a greater unmet demand. We want to add support for a PhD-level training program in Neuroscience. The are of neuroscience research is vitally important to Floridians as it includes research on diseases such as Alsheimer's, Parkinson's, epilepsy, MS and muscular dystrophy. Our Neuroscience PhD program is nationally recognized as of outstanding quality but, until now, has not been able to provide training for all qualified Florida residents. We are seeking to support three Florida neuroscience PhD students, at a level that follows the full-cost study that provided the basis for our current funding. The requested amount will provide educational support for a total of 21 Floridians. |
