Statewide Interest: |
The State of Florida will be served by assisting in the much needed revitalization of the area's association with a state university that has been severely effected by a lack of community investment in public infrastructure, a high crime and poverty rate, and the absence of any long-range community plans. Funding of this project would improve the residents' quality of life and provide the blighted University Area with physical improvements to serve as a catalyst for future reinvestment in the area. |

Project Description: |
This project involves implementation of the University Area Community Master Plan adopted into the Comprehensive Plan in 2000. The plan identities a vision for enhanced neighborhood identity by creating a stable, safe and livable community through physical redevelopment to achieve a pedestrian friendly, mixed-use area. The University area was developed in the 1960's primarily to house university students and was abandoned by the students due to poor construction quality, low income (presently the poorest district in Hillsborough County), and a high crime rate (presently the highest in Hillsborough County). Construction of the 22nd St improvements and adjacent development is the key to the economic revitalization of the University Area Community. |
|
Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
This request seeks matching funds to obtain right-of-way acquisition and physical improvements to 22nd Street as a main street corridor. The development of a main street corridor in this location will capitalize on the construction of a new elementary and trades high school and a Hillsborough County Health & Social Services facility, reinforce the qualities important to the community, and create needed investment into the area in a controlled method. The University Area Community Plan project is included in the County's continuing program of community-based planning projects. |
