Statewide Interest: |
This project addresses improving water quality, at a minimum, as it relates to a larger, regionally significant, highly degraded chain of lakes system. In addition, the upper Ocklawaha River is a designated priority water body under the 1987 Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) Act. |

Project Description: |
This project is the first priority ranking in the Upper Ocklawaha River Basin Initiative. FY 2003-2004 submitted by the St. Johns River Water Management District. It will:
1) Restore more natural lake level fluctuations to improve water quality and reduce loss of lakeshore fish and wildlife habitat.
2) Provide for dredging of canals on Lake Griffin to improve boat acccess during low water conditions.
3) Provide for continued harvesting of gizzard shad from Lake Griffin.
4) Restore the historic flow of the Harris Bayou between Lake Harris and Griffin to provide greater flexibility in managing lake levels in the Burrell subbasin and to provide conveyance for additional flood control.
6) Provide for development of plans and specifications and obtain permits for modifications to increase flood conveyance through the Dora Canal. |
