Project Description:
Acquire land around Edward Waters College. New Initiative - University of North Florida and Edward College Joint Use Faculty --- In proposing a joint facility, UNF and EWC have identified three academic areas where there is a high demand for program graduates and where a joint-use UNF/EWC building would serve as the catalyst for collaborative planning. HIGHLIGHTED AREAS: Computer Information System; Building Construction; Teacher Education -- Building on their current programs in Computer and Information Sciences, UNF and EWC would combine resources to offer student undergraduate degrees in Computer Information Sciences. Under this proposal, EWC would award the Bachelor's Degree through its current program, with senior level course coordinated through UNF. Students completing this degree could then enroll in UNF to receive their Master's Degree in computer information systems. EWC and UNF prepare a second collaborative program for students interested in building construction management. Students enrolled in this proposed program would complete their first two-years of undergraduate study through EWC. For their last two-years of instruction, these students would enroll in UNF coursework, with UNF awarding the Bachelor of Science Degree in building construction management. UnF would offer the majority of its coursework for this program in the UNF/EWC facility, with a limited number of specialized laboratory courses occurring on the UNF Campus. College Neighborhood Development Program -- The college is requesting $2000,000 for land acquisition inthe community that surrounds the college. By acquiring specific properties that surround the college, a clearly defined campus can be established, neighborhood activities and college activities can be decolonized and a greater area of security can be established. Community Service Program --- Through our community service department, our students are required to provide a minimum of fifty (50) hours of community service each year as part of their acaqdemic requirement. Our students primarily assist various agencies to provide necessary services of two of our most vulnerable group--the youth and the elderly. Working with these agencies, our students interact with the elderly, engage them in educational activities, conduct workshops and facilitate social services to enable them to maintain and enhance their quality. They encourage the youngsters to stay in school, promote self-esteem and drug free behavior, mentor and assist them invarious after school programs.
